Common Sense Regina Launches "Back to Basics" Campaign

Oct 31st, 2024 – 2:30 pm

With the 2024 municipal election approaching, Common Sense Regina has launched a campaign calling for a return to the essential responsibilities of City Hall.

Launched in May, Common Sense Regina is a non-partisan grassroots group of more than 2,000 supporters, activists, and volunteers that advocates for an efficient, effective, and accountable municipal government that prioritizes the needs of its residents by focusing on essential services and common sense decision-making.

The “Back to Basics” initiative draws attention to the waste and dysfunction that’s been under the current Mayor and Council, and emphasizes the urgent need for a return to common sense and a renewed focus on core services like infrastructure, snow removal, and basic maintenance.

The campaign includes a series of physical and digital billboards across the city, digital advertising, and a Back to Basics petition that has already been signed by more than 1,000 supporters across the city.

“Regina residents are tired of seeing their tax dollars spent on flashy, non-essential projects while the basics are neglected,” said Peter McCaffrey, spokesperson for Common Sense Regina.

“City Hall’s primary job is to ensure that the services people rely on every day - like water, roads, and sanitation - are delivered efficiently and effectively. It’s time for a common sense Council and Mayor that understands that.”

As Regina faces challenges in maintaining its infrastructure and keeping up with basic services, Common Sense Regina is advocating for a shift in priorities that reflects the needs of the community.

The campaign aims to highlight growing concerns among residents who feel that essential services are taking a backseat to pet projects.

“Over the past few years, we’ve seen constant property tax hikes, while potholes, snow removal, safety and other core services get worse and worse,” said Peter McCaffrey.

“This election is an opportunity to demand accountability and push for a common sense Council and Mayor that prioritizes core services over unnecessary spending.”

With several new faces expected on Council, Common Sense Regina is committed to keeping voters informed and holding candidates accountable. The campaign will continue to provide updates and insights throughout the election season, encouraging residents to vote for common sense candidates who pledge to focus on the basics.

“It’s time for City Hall to get back to basics. We need a common sense Mayor and Council that delivers on what really matters: reliable, well-maintained, and effective services for everyone in our city,” added McCaffrey.
